Prioritizing Transgender Safety: Anti-Violence Initiatives and Community Support (Virtual)

November 18, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming individuals continue to experience high violence rates in communities across the country, particularly Black and Latinx trans women. Yet, they are often overlooked and underserved by community agencies and nonprofit resources. In honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance, this session will highlight these disparities and call on participants to identify the role they can play in ending systemic violence against trans people. In this session, participants will explore why the trans community is disproportionately impacted by sexual violence, look at the specific needs of trans clients, and engage in dialogue about how to meet these needs better. Participants will learn about issues impacting the trans community locally in San Antonio and will leave with a better understanding of the trans-affirming resources available locally and nationally.

Presenter: Lex Loro (She/Her/Hers and They/Them/Theirs) is a queer justice activist, community health educator, and mental health professional whose work focuses primarily on improving access to mental health care for LGBTQ+ individuals.
