CEU Series – Counselor’s Toolkit: Engaging Transgender Survivors of Sexual Assault

Course Description:
In this training, mental health professionals will learn about relevant issues impacting the transgender and nonbinary community, effective ways to connect with transgender clients, and what it means to be a gender-affirmative care provider. Participants will explore why this community is disproportionately impacted by sexual violence, look at the specific needs of LGBTQ+ clients, and engage in dialogue about how to better meet these needs. All participants will leave the session with resources to help enrich their practice and a better understand of the role they can personally play in supporting the transgender community in San Antonio and beyond.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the lived reality of transgender and nonbinary survivors in Texas and the U.S. and recognize the barriers that these individuals face when accessing mental health care services
- Explore best practices for serving LGBTQ+ clients and determine how to implement these practices
- Recognize personal biases and the role they play in the provision of care
- Understand and gain confidence in practicing gender-affirmative care
