Each May, Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us that taking care of our mental well-being is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. At the Rape Crisis Center we know firsthand how important mental health support is for survivors. Healing is never one size fits all, but prioritizing mental health can be a powerful first step.
Whether you’re a survivor, a loved one supporting someone in healing, or someone navigating stress in everyday life, these small steps can make a big difference:
1.Set Healthy Boundaries
Give yourself permission to say no, take breaks, or limit interactions that feel emotionally draining. Boundaries are an act of self-respect.
2.Practice Mindful Breathing
Even 2-3 minutes of deep, intentional breathing can help regulate your nervous system. Tray inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 4, and exhaling for 4.
3.Make Time for Joy
Schedule something you enjoy, like reading, dancing, journaling, or simply being in nature.
4.Talk to Someone You Trust
You don’t have to carry the weight alone. Whether it’s a counselor, a friend, or a support group, sharing your truth is healing.
5.Reach Out for Professional Support
Therapy isn’t just for crisis, it’s for growth. Contact a licensed counselor who can provide you with compassionate support.
Healing is not linear, and mental health looks different for everyone. But one thing is certain, and that is you deserve peace, safety, and support. Make your mental health a priority this month and always. Remember, you never have to walk the path of healing alone.
