Because play is the universal language for self-expression in children, play therapy techniques can help culturally diverse children increase their communication and self-expression in counseling. This presentation will: • Help mental health providers understand varied backgrounds and provide culturally competent care • Highlight issues faced by minority children, the impact on their mental health, and effective treatments that address these issues • Discuss guidelines on using play therapy techniques in counseling children from various cultural backgrounds • Provide hands on practice of play therapy interventions that will aid the clinician in providing quality care for the issues faced by the minority child Dr. Laurie A.
